Playing Catch Up

So much has happened in the past week and I haven't been keeping up with much of anything. And now I think I'm getting sick. It's a great combination.

The first good thing about being sick is you get to stay home from work. Along with that, you get to catch up on the million hours of tv you have recorded if you're like me. I've been watching tv like it's my job. I'm much better at watching tv than I am at my job. Food for thought.

So anyways, after the race last Sunday (two Sundays ago actually), S&L, J and I went to J's parent's house. They all had coffee and L got burned. It was a nice out. The four of us went to Cora's for breakfast food and had a super fun waitress who made fun of us for drinking water and being "eggs and bacon" boring (S). It was such a nice day that I wanted to keep moving, but there wasn't enough time. Time only for a shower at home until we had to be at J's grandparent's house for dinner.

By then, the four of us who ran (me, SJ, and J's parents) were extremely sore and exhausted. We ate and it wasn't long before it was time to go home.

That, like I said, was two Sundays ago. I haven't run since. I've been missing it though. I woke up a couple of days feeling sad for no reason. But it's okay because I have a 5K race tomorrow. Sick or not, raining or not, I will be running. It's for charity, part of the huge United Way campaign. Working for the federal government, you are expected to donate to the United Way. I don't. But I will do things like pay some money to run. That makes more sense to me.

Other than that, L and I went and picked up our altered bridesmaid dresses (the dress fits!), we did some last minute bachelorette planning and shopping and I'm sure a million other things. I swear I wasn't home one single night last week.

Saturday was SW's bachelorette party. This deserves a post of its own so I will do that. Later.

My first half marathon - the Army Run 2008

Last Sunday morning was the big race. The half marathon I've been talking about for the past two and half months. The race started at 9am and it was freezing. We shivered our way to the start line and after a quick pee stop, poured into the corral. Here we are all huddled together:

IMG_3463 (Medium)

I was cold for the first 10K then I warmed up a bit. I had been running for an hour at that point so it was to be expected. The route went right by my work and I was buoyed by the huge pink K I put up in my window. Running by that and then down a huge hill were motivation enough to keep me going for a while.

I hit a wall around 13K and stopped to walk for a little longer than usual. I finished off my sports beans (jelly beans that are packed with protein - a life saver) and filled up on water.

I was okay after that. I ran past J's grandparents and SJ's boy AN - so nice to have people cheering me on. I was at about 17K when a guy came up behind me. He was running just a little faster than me so I decided he would be my personal pace bunny. I introduced myself and asked if I could run with him. My new friend and I pushed through the last 4K, past J, S and L who were there to cheer me on, and across the finish line.

IMG_3479 (Medium)

The time on the clock read 2 hours and 6 minutes. I couldn't believe it. My chip time was 2 hours and 3 minutes. A good 30 minutes faster that I was expecting. No wonder J was surprised to see me - I was only a couple of minutes behind his dad.

I had my chip removed, was handed my medal by a cute army guy, grabbed my bagel and orange slice and went to join J, S and L. I was able to cheer on SJ and M as they ran past.

It's surreal to think that I was actually able to run that far. I know people run marathons all the time and even longer distances, but for me, that 21.1K was the longest I had ever run and I felt great. All the time I spent running over the summer, all the blisters and sore muscles, the trips and the falls, it was all worth it. Every now and then "I just ran a half marathon in 2 hours!" would pop in my head. Surreal.

Forgive me

Here are my excuses for not blogging:

- I'm busy
- When I'm not busy, I'm sleeping
- I haven't dealt with any pictures since Saturday and therefore cannot blog about the race or anything else yet

That is all.

As promised...

As promised, here is a picture of my new hair:

P365 Day 264 September 20 IMG_3443 (Medium)

I am too exhausted to do the race pictures right now, but I will tell you that I finished the race and did MUCH better than I thought I would. I finished in 2 hours and 3 minutes. My body is stiffening up more and more every minute and my mind is screaming at me to go to bed.

I shall listen.

Headache - A post in which I complain

Bear with me - I don't have any real problems in my life.

I went today to have my hair dyed. This is something I've never done outside of the comfort of my own bathroom. I was nervous and excited and totally not prepared.

I was not prepared for the associated smells nor the time I was going to spend in the shop. If you know me, then you know that I am not a typical girl. I do not have a thing for shoes or for clothes nor do I wear perfume or tons of make up. Having only dyed my hair from a box, I didn't know all he steps and how toxic the smells were. I've never had my hair washed so many times, and combed and brushed and yanked and whatever else. It was physically painful and I thought that was why my head was pounding for hours afterwards, but then I realized that, even after a shower, my head smelled awful. It was an ammonia-y musky smell. I'm pretty sure the smell was the reason for the lasting headache.

I also did not know that getting my hair dyed was going to take 4 hours. Four hours! And people do this regularly? Really? Thankfully, my only tasks today were to run a short distance and to eat some pasta, otherwise I could never have spent that kind of time doing anything let alone something so superficial.

All that to say that I now have dark brown hair (J called me his raven - I think he likes it) with highlights and a monster headache. I'm happy with my new hair. I do have pictures, but you'll have to wait. Sorry!

Crusty and Crafty

The goings on in my life aren't terribly exciting these days. The two main things that I have to report are crusty and crafty.

Starting with crusty... our little boy cat's eye was really goopy (that's the technical term). We were thinking he probably had an eye infection so J, on his day off, took Rolo to the vet. The vet loved Rolo except when Rolo brought out his bad boy growls. The vet left and came back with huge gloves, obviously afraid of being chomped on. We've dealt with this before with vet techs and vets and I don't blame them one bit, but we know our cat. He is the sissiest cat but hisses a lot. J convinced the vet to let him hold Rolo while she did her thing. Rolo was totally fine in J's arms.

The vet thinks he has a blocked tear duct hence all the goop and gave us some eye drops. She also checked his heart murmur and his teeth and the little white bump on his head. Our cats are nothing if not interesting.

So J gets home with little Rolo in his case, lets him out and the first thing Sandy does is hisses at him. She hissed at him all day. And still does every now and then, three days later. The case is still sitting in the front hall and Rolo goes in whenever he passes it. Sandy does not. It's the weirdest thing.

IMG_3586 (Medium)

That's the part about crusty, now for the part about crafty... About a month ago, a coworker of mine (OM) and his wife had a baby. And then there was a baby shower for another coworker (LP) who was due this week. Yesterday was another baby shower for yet another coworker (RM) so I finally got crafting.

IMG_3592 (Medium)

I chose two designs (the whale and the sea horse) and created another (the turtle), I cut them out and ironed the stencils on. I painted and blow dried and peeled the stencils off.

IMG_3594 (Medium)

I crafted three onesies for three babies, all in about 45 minutes. All while J was drumming his little heart out to RockBand 2. How's that for crafty? All my freezer paper stencils can be found on my Flickr set.

I delivered OM's onesies with apologies for being so late. I sent J off to work with LP's onesie because he works with her boyfriend and I gave RH hers at her shower. One out of three ain't bad.

What's bad is that there are three more people due in the next little bit so I'm going to have to do this all over again very soon. Oh, make that 4 people. The last one is in December so I have some time.

Does anyone else feel like they are in the center of a baby boom? Thankfully, so far, it's only at work. My friends are still in the getting-married phase for the most part.

My little J turns 27

J's birthday season was in full swing last week and continues into this week. Friday night was a small birthday bash with S&L and A&S at our place. It was a combined birthday event for J and L and included dinner, cake and games.

IMG_3425 (Medium)

After a walk after dinner, we sat on the new patio furniture outside, even though our legs were getting wet from the rain-soaked chairs.

P365 Day 256 September 12 IMG_3428 (Medium)

Then it was time for Trivial Pursuit, which I didn't do terribly at. It was a late night but a lot of fun.

Sunday afternoon, my parents came over, drank some beer and gave J a new espresso / cappucino maker.

P365 Day 258 September 14 IMG_3573 (Medium)

Later we went to J's parent's place for birthday dinner. He cleaned up there - new sunglasses, a nice shirt, a gargoyle (yet to be named) for the deck and a weather center. We went home happy and well-fed.

The birthday celebration continued into Monday with a dinner at the Keg with over a dozen of J's work friends. It was a not so late night.

You might be wondering what I got J for his birthday. Well, I didn't get him anything. We got the new 50mm lens for the dslr a couple of weeks ago and he bought himself RockBand 2 on Sunday. It's impossible to get things for someone who buys everything themself. Just saying.

Happy birthday, J. Welcome to the world of 27.

We have patio furniture!

I stayed home Wednesday because the patio furniture was getting delievered. They said they would be there between 12 and 5pm. I was a good little housewife and did laundry and cleaned. I spent some time on the internet and watching tv. J would call and other people would email and ask if the patio set had been delivered yet. Nope, no deliveries.

It was 5pm when I called J to complain that the guy still hadn't come. He did the manly thing and called the store to ask what the the heck was going on. "Oh, we said 12 until 6pm" they said. Rrright.

At 5:45pm the truck showed up and was actually still sitting outside the house when J got home (late) from work. He didn't even go inside because he wanted it all put together NOW. So that's what we did - sat in the garage putting together chair after chair and then the table.

IMG_3416 (Medium)

The chairs were easier to assemble than the IKEA dining room chairs and the set looks really good on the new deck.

IMG_3419 (Medium)

It's always nice to have something nice that you got for cheap. We've been out there at least 4 times already and love it. The cats however do not love when we hang out in the back and have spent many hours screaming at the back door. Maybe they need some comfy chairs to sit on too.

Running, dressing and fall tv

Sundays are normally the long-slow-distance days, but more often than not I am too busy to dedicate any amount of time to running that day. So my long runs happen on Mondays. This past Monday, after taking almost 2 full weeks off, I went out to run 20K. My ankle felt strong but my body wasn't too happy. I went 19.5K and thought the lower half of my body was going to pack up and leave me for doing that to it.

After moaning and groaning and finally trying to make my muscles feel better by soaking them in the tub, I signed up for the race. I am officially entered in my first half marathon.

IMG_3551 (Medium)

Won't you all be happy when the race is finally over so you don't have to read about me and my running self anymore?

Tuesday night, L and I went with SW to have our dresses fitted. The seamstress, R, was very down to earth and friendly and competent. It was so nice to have the dress on, all pinned to my body in all the right places. It felt really good.

IMG_3553 (Medium)

We left our dresses with her and will hopefully hear something next week. We are a month away. Today. A&S, your day is almost here.

Okay, now let me just talk about tv for a minute. I forgot just how much I love it! We watched the season premier of Prison Break last night and So You Think You Can Dance Canada tonight. Grey's Anatomy and Dancing with the Stars both start at the end of the month and I can't wait. Yay fall tv!

Sunday sunday

Sunday was a busy day. I worked the wedding show in the morning then L and I hopped in the car and headed to Hawkesbury for another bridal shower for SW. This time it was A's family who hosted so L and I had only to play nice and make sure S was good.

IMG_3535 (Medium)

There was food and drink and presents and games. I think we stayed about 3 hours then headed back to town. We got all dressed up and headed downtown for L's birthday dinner at Beckta.

IMG_3548 (Medium)

The service was excellent. They would actually come around and fold your napkin while you were in the bathroom. And the bathroom had real towels. I'm telling you, it was a nice nice place. The food was great too - I had salmon and J and I shared the chocolate bomb dessert.

After a long week and a jam-packed weekend, I was exhausted. I made it home without falling asleep but probably only because I was so cold. Once we were home it was game over. I was asleep within minutes.

Happy birthday, L! I hope you had a great day.

Friday night and Saturday

Friday night, my big bad plan was to spend the night in. I didn't want to go anywhere, I didn't want to see anyone, I didn't want to stay up late. Well, I didn't go anywhere, but J had some people over and I managed to stay up later than I wanted to.

LS's sub wasn't working - or maybe it was his amp - so he brought the sub over to plug into our amp. It was definitely the sub. The boys then played RockBand together and had a sweaty party in the basement. Gross. KW&SB showed up a little later.

J played around with the new 50mm lens and got some nice pictures.

My creation

I think my favourite is one of me and Sandy.

P365 Day 249 September 5 IMG_3345 (Medium)

Saturday I got myself up early to make my way to the Ottawa Wedding Show which I was working yet again. The show was the busiest I've ever seen and the day actually passed quickly. J got up with me and drove me in so he could have the car. He came and picked me up and when I got home was like a little kid showing me everything he had done - vacuumed, changed the oil, made banana bread, cleaned the glass table tops, worked on the deck... I'm sure I'm missing something. He was such a good house husband.

I was hardly home when S&L showed up. We had a great dinner and then played Balderdash and watched a movie. I sucked at the game, but had a good time.

My creation

This is how Sandy spent a lot of the night:

IMG_3375 (Medium)

Very cute. I stayed up way later than I should have but it was definitely worth it. And normally that would be the end of the weekend activities, but not this weekend. More to come on a big Sunday.

Shoe shopping, soccer and beer

Last Thursday night was the shoe shopping experience that I mentioned last post. Let's not talk anymore about that. BUT! I finally uploaded the pictures from that night and here they are:

Good news

Good news: My ankle is not broken. I'll be heading out running tonight, before it gets dark this time. I might even sign up for the race tonight too. Just to prove my resolve to you all. I WILL run a half marathon.

In other news, J's birthday season has officially started. I "got him" a new lens for the camera: a Canon 50mm f/1.8 and a filter to go with it. It's very cute and stubby on the camera body.

P365 Day 247 September 3 IMG_3521 (Medium)

This gets me out of having to get him anything else. Perfect. Though I do have an idea that's really for the two of us.. not much of a birthday present.

Probably spending the night in tonight after a somewhat tense shoe shopping experience last night. I bought a pair of heels but not after almost breaking down. I never said it would be easy. Tonight though I get to wear my running shoes. Back to my comfort zone.

Ankle / Running update

My ankle has been bothering me a little less each day and was really good today. After work, J and I went to a bunch of different places looking for patio (deck) furniture. We walked a lot and my ankle seemed fine. So I decided to try running. I did up my shoes really tight and headed out. I went less than 2K but my ankle feels fine. It doesn't hurt but it is tired.

Hopefully I'll get the results from the xrays tomorrow to be sure nothing's broken but I'm pretty sure I'm going to be fine.

The long weekend of parties

I figured that, being a long weekend, everyone would have left town and we would be pretty free to do whatever. Boy, was I wrong! We had tons of stuff scheduled this weekend but still managed some down time to hang out at home. Beautiful.

We kicked off the weekend by going to see Hamlet 2 with a bunch of friends. The movie was funny but almost too awkward for me. Definitely not one you have to see in the theatre. It was a long week so we went home after the movie and collapsed into bed.

Saturday we didn't have anywhere to be until 5 so I worked on my tan and my book while J puttered around doing house and deck things. It was nice to spend some time at home, though the cats weren't happy about us being outside.

After 5 we were at S&J's place for their deck party. JW is amazing and had a ton of food. The whole party made me feel old because there were babies and toddlers everywhere. Thankfully C is like me and was someone I could talk to about non-baby things.

IMG_3466 (Medium)

We left after about 3 hours to head over to S&L's for their end of summer party. Kind of depressing, no? There weren't too many people there so it was nice to get the chance to meet S&L's friends and actually spend some time talking to them. Turns out they're really nice.

What else is nice is the random neighbours who climb across the balconies between the houses and show up on the deck. Their poor wife and girlfriend showed up the conventional way (at the front door) and said over and over again how embarassed they were. We thought it was funny.

IMG_3472 (Medium)

Other random happenings of the night include an impromtu highschool-esque dance party on the deck and staying up until after 5am. That was a bad idea, fun at the time, but we definitely paid for it Sunday.

Sunday J and I were home for about an hour. The poor cats were mega confused when we showed up mid-morning, showered and changed, and grabbed all of the stuff we needed for the day, and headed right back out. We went right back to S&L's so I could grab L and get to JB's house for SW's bridal shower.

A few hiccups here and there, but we finally got everyone together at JB's house for the shower. About 15 minutes later, the boys rolled in. We had them all come for a game where SW is blindfolded, feels the guys legs and has to guess which one is A.

IMG_3479 (Medium)

She picked A out of the crowd, but apparently had a hard time picking between A and J. Good times. There were other games and present opening and food and drinks. I think SW had a good time. She definitely didn't mind hamming it up for the camera.

IMG_3503 (Medium)

Six of us went for dinner afterwards (me and J, A&S and S&L). A&S were definitely the most exciting and least exhausted, but J did have his moments.

IMG_3505 (Medium)

We went to S&L's to drop off their stuff and pick up ours. We ended up watching Hot Fuzz, but it was a struggle to stay awake. I'm impressed we were awake past 8pm. Thankfully J drove home because I was nodding off the whole time. I was asleep about 2 minutes after we got home.

I slept for 11 hours and still needed a nap today. I conked out after my parents left and before we went to J's parent's place. Like I said, it was a hugely busy weekend but so nice to have so many things to do and people to see. It's going to make going back to work somewhat bearable. I say this now....
